Theodore “Ted” Winburn was born on June 23, 1925 and grew up in Houghton, SD. During High School in 1941, he began hauling livestock part-time for Bud Herseth. Upon Graduation from Hecla High School in 1943, Ted started driving truck full-time. He also trucked for Clayton Ross during those years.

On July 21, 1949, he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Stella Whittmeyer and they had three sons: Douglas, Teddy, and Tony. In 1953 Ted bought his own truck, creating his own company, Winburn Trucking. He received many trucking awards over the years including the Highly Recommended Livestock Loss Prevention Practices and Commendable “Farm to Market” Safe Livestock Delivery Record. Most notably, Ted managed to log thousands upon thousands of miles during his career, with no serious accidents. Ted once said, “Trucking is all I know, but all I ever wanted to do”.

When Ted found time off the road, you would find him maintaining his truck and trailers or working on other projects. Besides White Freightliners, Ted loved John Deere Tractors and he rebuilt a few of those. Ted also made time to help other people with various projects. Regardless if it was mechanical, electrical, plumbing, or carpentry, Ted was up for the challenge. In Ted’s “free” time he also enjoyed bowling, golf, and going to countless car races with his friends. Ted and Stella also enjoyed time at their Clear Lake Cabin entertaining and being entertained by friends and neighbors.  Ted was one of the founding Board Members of the Clear Lake Betterment Association.

After retiring, they loved spending winters in Arizona escaping the snow and cold and making time for more outdoor activities like golf and softball to name a few, or just checking out the local flea markets. Dining out with friends was a treasured time and Stella also made sure they went dancing at least once a week.  Ted and Stella shared nearly 64 years of marriage before she passed away on April 27, 2013.

Surviving Ted are his sons, Teddy Winburn of Sisseton, SD and Tony (Dawn) Winburn of Houghton, SD; three grandchildren:  Scott (Becky) Winburn of Sartell, MN, Teanna (Dan) Kuhlman of Avon, SD and Boe (Renata) Winburn of Houghton, SD; and five great-grandchildren:  Jalen, Kasen, Maesa, Rance and Evrett.

Ted’s wife, Stella; son, Douglas; parents, Harry and Mae; and brother, Harold preceded him in death.
