Susan Rae Brick was born on July 27, 1946, to Earl and Vivian (Olson) Brick in Aberdeen, South Dakota. She lived in the same home on the “West Hill” with her parents, sister, and two brothers all her growing up years. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran church.

Susan graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in 1964 and went to work at Northwestern Bell Telephone. In 1970, she went to visit her cousin and, in Susan fashion, ended up meeting the love of her life, Leonard Chester, on a blind date, turning her visit to California into a long-term adventure.

Leonard and Susan married on July 30, 1971, in National City, California. In September 1974, they welcomed their beautiful daughter, Patricia Lynn, into the world. They moved back to Aberdeen in 1976, where they made their home for 32 years.

In September 1979, their handsome son, Jonathan Earl, was born. Susan was able to stay at home with Patty and Jon throughout their early childhood. When the kids were older, she went back to school at Presentation College where she earned her associate degree in business. Susan joined AAL, now Thrivent, where she worked for several years as an Insurance Agent. Susan developed many close relationships with her peers and clients. She worked a variety of jobs after her time with AAL ending with her working career at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen. Susan loved her time at Bethesda because she was surrounded by many wonderful people.

In January 2008 Susan leaving Leonard back in Aberdeen, she moved to Omaha, NE to help take care of her first grandchild, her favorite (only) granddaughter, Ashlyn Taylor Hutchinson. Leonard would join Susan in Omaha in October 2008. They lived in Omaha for 14 years and were able to be there for the births and early lives of all their grandchildren. Aiden William Hutchinson was born in September 2010, Gideon Ari Chester came into this world in January 2015 and Elliot Lev Chester in September 2017. Her grandchildren meant the world to her. She cherished every minute she was able to spend with them.

Susan and Leonard moved to Rockton, Illinois, in 2021 to join Patty’s family. Jon and his family also moved to Rockton shortly after, bringing the family together again.

Susan loved to read, and she loved church and bible study with her ladies’ groups both in Omaha and Rockton. Susan was a woman of immense faith. Her faith in God provided her the strength to fight breast cancer for nearly seven years.

Grateful for having shared Susan’s life are her husband of 52 years, Leonard; their children: Patty (Ryan) Hutchinson and Jon (Toni) Chester; her four grandchildren, Ashlyn, 16, Aiden, 13; Gideon, 9; and Elliot, 6 all in Rockton, Illinois; one sister, Nancy Nelson, Aberdeen; two brothers, Roger (Bonnie) Brick Warner and Jim (Deb) Brick, Aberdeen; and several nieces and nephews.

Susan was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, and aunts and uncles.
