Robert “Bob” Bernard Bourdon was born March 13, 1928 in Aberdeen, South Dakota. This is the area where he was raised and attended school, graduating from Aberdeen Central High School in 1946.
Robert enlisted with the U.S. Navy on July 13, 1946 and served on Midway Island during World War II. He earned a 79th Congress World War II Victory Medal and was honorably discharged on June 23, 1948. He was a “tough old sailor”, which over the years, he would prove time and time again.
Bob was united in marriage to Margaret Seura on November 24, 1950. Margaret passed away on May 21, 2014. Throughout their blessed 63 years together they showed an extraordinary example of true love and support for each other.
Bob worked for the General Trading Company as an auto parts salesman. He and Margaret also owned and operated Bourdon’s Antiques for forty years. Bob was a hardworking, honest man. His children keep fond memories of their times together, from going on camping trips to the Black Hills, as kids, visiting their second home in the Cayman Islands, and many summer evenings at their property near town.
Some of Bob’s happiest moments in retirement were spent wintering with Margaret in the Cayman Islands visiting their daughter, Lynn, and grandson, Sonny. Bob built two homes while there, which made it possible for all of his family to have a place to stay when they visited.
In later years you would find him outdoors, gardening, cultivating, planting and moving trees with his son, Kevin, mowing, always busy - no grass grew under his feet. Literally. He loved going for rides anywhere - in the county, to the Elm Lake, the river, or wherever the road led and truly enjoyed the beauty of nature.
Blessed to have shared in Bob’s life are his children: Steven Bourdon, Brian Bourdon, Kathy Bourdon, Lynn Bourdon and Kevin (Carla) Bourdon; seven grandchildren: Latasha Story, Angella Willprecht, Sonny (Emma) Rivers, Jamie (Spencer) Bruckner, Jared (Jen) Bourdon, Melissa Bourdon, and Nicholas Bourdon; and three great grandchildren.
Robert was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Margaret Bourdon, one daughter, Landa Gail Bourdon, and one son, Robert Bourdon, Jr.
Bob loved his family dearly and every conversation or visit with him would end with him saying “now you be careful out there”. We love you Dad/Bob/Grandpa - “you be careful out there”. Until we meet again. Forever in our hearts.
