Richard “Dick” C. Westmoreland, 83, of Aberdeen, passed away Saturday, March 21, 2020, peacefully at his home. His wishes were to be cremated.
His memorial service, for immediate family only, will be 2 p.m., Wednesday, March 25, 2020, at Schriver’s Memorial Mortuary and Crematory, 414 5th Avenue NW, Aberdeen, with Father Michael Griffin officiating.
No visitation will take place prior to the service.
Burial, with military rites, will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen, at a later date.
Richard “Dick” C. Westmoreland was born June 23, 1936, to Charles and Lillian (McClain) Westmoreland in Fort Dodge, IA. One of 15 children, Dick, was raised on the family farm, attended school in Fort Dodge, and graduated from Fort Dodge High School.
Dick entered the United States Air Force in 1955 and served his country until the time of his honorable discharge in 1959. He then furthered his education and received his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Minnesota.
Dick was united in marriage to Karen Ulwelling in Rose Creek, MN, in 1961. He worked for Continental Grain Company in Minneapolis, MN; Buffalo, NY; Montevideo, MN; and Los Angeles, CA, before moving to Aberdeen in 1968. He continued his career until 1994 when he decided to retire. Dick continued to reside in Aberdeen until the time of his passing.
Dick was an exceptional woodworking craftsman and also enjoyed playing golf and traveling. He especially loved spending time with his family and attending his eight grandkid’s various activities throughout the country.
Grateful to have shared in Dick’s life are his wife of 58 years, Karen Westmoreland; his children: Wendy (Jim) Beare, Cindee (Scott) Walz, Vicki (Travis) Bissen and Todd (Sara) Westmoreland; his grandchildren: Alyson (Corey) Toay, Erica Beare, Matthew and Grant Walz, Jacob and Brooklyn Bissen, and Nate and Levi Westmoreland; his siblings: Rita Jones, Liz (Bob) Kaffer, Myrna (Ron) Landherr, Sr. Ruthe, Nadine, Jennifer, Mary Jo, Dennis (Shelly), Gregg (Cathy), Tom (Michelle), and Jim Westmoreland; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dick was preceded in death by his son, Mark Westmoreland; his parents, Charles and Lillian Westmoreland; and his siblings: Rose Speltz, Dorothy Smith, and Don Westmoreland.
