Philip Margolies Obituary

Philip Margolies, of Aberdeen, SD, passed away on January 6, 2023, at Mother Joseph Manor, at the age of 82.

Philip’s wishes were to be cremated and no formal services will be held.

Schriver’s Memorial Mortuary and Crematory, 414 5th Avenue NW, Aberdeen, is in charge of arrangements.  Family and friends may sign the online guestbook at www.schriversmemorial.com.

Philip was born October 11, 1940, in Manhattan, New York, to Joseph and Frances (Brailovsky) Margolies.  He grew up in the Bronx and graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School.  After graduation, he attended Interstate Commerce School in Chicago and met his future wife, Dana Gorin.

Philip married Dana on January 28, 1962, in Chicago, Il.  They resided in Queens, NY, until 1964 when they moved to the Chicago suburb of Des Plaines, IL, where they raised their four children: Marc, Jo, Terri, and Julie.  Philip and Dana retired to Las Vegas in 1992.  They moved to Aberdeen, SD, in 2018.

Philip was a truck driver and small business owner for most of his life. In 1964, he opened his family’s camp baggage business in Chicago, continuing a family business his father and uncles started in 1938 in the Bronx.  The family business continues today, through his son, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, marking 86 camping seasons.  Five generations of Margolies have been providing service to summer campers.  Over the past 60 years, Philip involved hundreds of family and extended family members, neighbors, and his children’s and grandchildren’s friends in his summer camp baggage business.  Philip also owned several trucking companies in Chicago and Las Vegas.

Philip enjoyed traveling with his wife and children to Florida and overseas.  He and Dana traveled to Hawaii many times, Italy, Greece, Germany, Switzerland, France, and England.  They also enjoyed many cruises, including twice through the Panama Canal.

He is survived by his wife Dana; his children Marc (Susan) Margolies, Jo Platt, Terri Margolies, and Julie (Michael) Mazenko; ten grandchildren, Emily, Michael, Levi, Asher, and Jesse Margolies, Hilton, Isabella, and Eric Platt, and Austen and Chloe Mazenko; two great-grandchildren, Cyrus and Ashton Margolies; his sister Linda Margolies; and his brother Howard Margolies.

Philip was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Frances; his brother Alan Margolies; and his grandson Jacob Margolies.
