Mary Lou (Schwan) Sahli

Mary Lou Sahli, 85, of Aberdeen, SD passed away Wednesday, January 13, 2021, at Avera Mother Joseph Manor, Aberdeen.

Mass of Christian burial is 10:30 am, Friday, January 22, 2021, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Aberdeen, with Fr. Michael Griffin, celebrant.

Burial is at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Aberdeen.

Luncheon and time of fellowship will follow the burial at Schriver's Memorial Fellowship Center.

Visitation is 5:00-7:00 p.m., Thursday, at the mortuary with a liturgical wake and rosary at 7:00 p.m.  Visitation continues one hour before Mass at the church.

Mary Lou Schwan was born September 17, 1935 to Ignatius and Louise (Millard) Schwan in Aberdeen, SD.  She attended St. Mary’s Catholic school and graduated from Aberdeen Central High School.  Mary Lou married Edward Hughes on June 30, 1954. Together they raised four children: Vicki, Dean, Cindi, and Michael.  She was married to John W. Sahli on November 4, 1964 in Aberdeen.  John and Mary Lou had two children, Jeff and Doug.  Mary Lou worked at St. Luke’s Hospital as a histologist. She retired in 1986 so she could take care of John at home until he passed away in 1999. 

In retirement, Mary Lou had many interests including working with ceramics in her basement, knitting and cooking.  She enjoyed playing Bingo and gardening in the summers.  Mary Lou very much loved her grandchildren and spending time with them.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children: Vicki (John) Vetsch of Sioux Falls, Dean (Lee Lampbert) Hughes of Rapid City, Cindi (Doug) Fritz of Akaska, SD, Michael (Janet) Hughes of Aberdeen, and Doug (DeDee) Sahli of Aberdeen; sisters, Marleyne (Walt) Buechler and Margaret Quimby; 15 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Mary Lou was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; son, Jeff Sahli; a stillborn son, Ignatius; and siblings, Dennis Schwan and Judith Schwan Walth.
