Mary Magdalene Wolf was born to Joseph and Margaret (Salwei) Wolf on August 8, 1944 in Aberdeen, SD and was the sixth of twelve children. Mary grew up on a farm near Leola and attended country school in the area. The Wolf’s moved to Aberdeen when Mary was twelve. As a young lady she worked at the Virginia Café in Aberdeen as a waitress
Little did Mary know that moving to town would eventually introduce her to the man of her dreams, Peter Malsom. Mary and Peter were neighbors on Sixth Avenue and North Kline, and one summer day Mary fell in love at first sight with Peter, who was working on the roof of his garage. They were married on November 27, 1963 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Aberdeen. The following year, the two were blessed with the first of four children – Sally, Margaret, Peter and Cindy.
Mary was a stay-at-home mom until Peter and her ran the Eagles Café. When the café closed, she started an in-home daycare. Mary continued daycare for 32 years. In that time, many of her daycare kids grew to love her, referring to her as Grandma Mary. She retired from daycare due to health reasons when she was 70. Mary was a lifetime member of the Eagles Women’s Auxiliary.
Mary’s spare time consisted of gardening, bingo with her many friends, Sunday drives, and romance/mystery books. She loved sleepovers with her grandkids, where they played games and she shared many stories about their Grandpa Pete. Mary also shared stories about her life on the farm with her eleven siblings.
Grateful for having shared her life are her children: Sally (Logan) Fontenelle of Aberdeen, Margaret (Craig) Nelson of Aberdeen, Peter (Lisa) Malsom of Polk City, Iowa, and Cindy (Richard) Bachmeier of Aberdeen; brothers, Mike (Shirley) Wolf and Daniel (Carol) Wolf; sister, Wally Johnson; nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, parents, parents-in-law, siblings: Joe Wolf, Francis Wolf, Thomas Wolf, Kenneth Wolf, Lorraine Geffre, Marie Geffre, Margaret Montaque, and Rose Durband; and many brothers and sisters-in-law.
