Jean Elizabeth Salzsiedler was born September 23, 1932, to Walter and Lillian (Solmonson) Salzsiedler in Eureka, SD, the oldest of three children. The family made their home in Herreid, SD, where her father was the Campbell County Sheriff and her mother was a nurse. When Jean was 16 years old, her father died in the line of duty. One of Jean and her siblings’ proudest moments was when their father’s name was added to the National Law Officers Memorial in Washington, DC, and Pierre, SD.
Upon graduation from Herreid High School in 1950, Jean entered the Presentation School of Nursing in Aberdeen and graduated with her RN Degree in June 1953.
On November 5, 1953, Jean was united in marriage to local haberdasher, Leo P. Weber at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Together they raised four children: Tom, Tim, Maribeth, and Terry; and were lifelong residents of Aberdeen sharing 64 years of marriage until Leo died in 2018.
Jean was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in the Altar Society, a Band member, as well as several bridge clubs, Red Hats, and Questers. Many of her years were spent attending the kids’ sports and activities. She rarely missed a single event. Leo and Jean had many long-time friends, loved to garden, and did some traveling in their later years.
Jean returned to her nursing profession and became known as the “Mother of Hospice” in her work at Avera. She truly loved her job and was a strong advocate for compassionate care for end-of-life patients and their families. As a hospice nurse, she was awarded the Avera Distinguished Service Care Provider Award, the Aberdeen Exchange Club Book of Golden Deeds Award, and the Avera St. Lukes One Pace Beyond Award. How fitting that her final month was spent being taken care of by some of the same nurses she worked with and mentored from a profession she so loved!
Jean’s greatest joys of her life were her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Leo and Jean continued to attend their grandchildren’s events as much as possible and were their biggest fans.
She is survived by her four children: Tom (Jeannie) Weber of Glendale, CA, Tim Weber of Peoria, AZ, Maribeth (Larry) Mueller of Mesa, AZ, and Terry (Teresa) Weber of Aberdeen, SD; grandchildren: Riley, Darrin, Megan, Ethan, Jean Marie, Kyra, and Andrew; great-grandchildren: Luke, Jaxson, Taylor, Emilia, Paige, Delaney, and Madilyn; sister JoAnn Fields of Plymouth, MN; sisters-in-law Vonnie Salzsiedler of Minneapolis, MN, Rosemary Weber of Apple Valley, MN, and Marcia Weber of Golden Valley, MN.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Lillian; husband, Leo; and brother, John Salzsiedler.
Jean will be welcomed into Heaven with open arms by the countless patients she helped with end-of-life-care.
Jean’s family extends our deepest thanks to all the staff at Nano Nagle, Mother Joseph Manor, Palliative Care, and Hospice Care that she received over the last three years. They will forever be grateful for your special care of their mom.
Memorial can be sent to Avera @Home Hospice in Aberdeen 706 S. Main St, Aberdeen, SD, 57401.
