James Durand was born November 26, 1946, to Gerald and Hilma (Swenson) Durand in Aberdeen.  His school years growing up in Aberdeen were active and filled with friends who have remained best friends for all of these years.  Jim was a high school wrestler and lettered in his junior year.  He graduated high school in 1964.

Jim graduated from Northern State College and soon after took a position with USDA as a grain warehouse examiner.  His job required travel around the entire country – from New Orleans to Duluth and California to Washington, DC.  Jim enjoyed travel but was happy when he was finally assigned to his home state and surrounding areas.  He retired in 2002 and for several years still performed freelance auditing for grain elevators in South Dakota.

In 1992, Jim married Carol Stierwalt in Aberdeen and became an instant father to her two daughters, Carlie and Kelly.  The couple was married for 27 years.

Jim was an avid fisherman and also enjoyed golfing, bowling, and hunting with his friends.  Sports were always important to him and he rarely missed watching his favorite teams play.  Jim especially enjoyed college and professional football, college basketball, and golf.

Jim was a loyal friend and loving father and grandfather.  In the last few years, he shared his love for fishing with his granddaughter, Lily and grandson, Carver.  They enjoyed playing card games, solving puzzles, and having squirt gun fights.  They both made Grandpa Jim very happy!

Survivors include his wife, Carol of Aberdeen; daughters, Carlie Stierwalt of Aberdeen and Kelly (Cory) Rath of Plymouth, MN; his wonderful grandchildren, Lily Ann and Carver Tobias Rath, whom he loved dearly; his sisters, Germaine (Larry) Chapman of Paoli, IN and Susan Durand of Aberdeen; and his brother, Dennis Durand of Aberdeen.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents.
