Irene Florence Lahr was born to Joseph and Catherine (Hoffman) Lahr on December 6, 1924, near Barnard, SD.  She came from a family of nine siblings. Irene attended school in Barnard through the 8th grade. She then worked in a café in the area.

Irene was united in marriage to John “Jack” Richard Kopetsky in Webster, SD on December 8, 1942. They moved to a farm near Frederick, SD where they raised their four children. Irene worked alongside Jack on the farm doing all the chores and even hauling grain. Irene was a hardworking woman. She was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it.

She loved spending time with her family and friends. Irene enjoyed hosting and cooking for them, especially when it came time to baking her own raised donuts, kolaches, and special goulash. Every winter Irene and Jack traveled until he passed away on December 1, 1983. After Jack died, she learned to crochet and made many afghans for her children and grandchildren.

Irene was a member of the Eastern Star. Jack was a member of the Shrine and she would travel with him to many Shrine events. She was a member of the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Frederick.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children: Gary (Dianna) Kopetsky, Darlene (Bob) Dosch, Patti (Kenny) Sieber; sister-in-law, Dorothy Lahr; ten grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; daughter, Delores Anderson; brothers: Ed Lahr, Peter Lahr, Tony Lahr, Leonard Lahr, Billy Lahr; sisters: Erma Burckhartzmeyer, Nellie Ostgard, Vera Kopetsky, Marie Voeller.

The family would like to thank the staff at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen for the wonderful loving care they gave to Irene for the past six years.
