Hollis M. Anderson, 76, of Aberdeen, passed away Monday, December 24, 2018, at his home.  His wishes were to be cremated.

Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 1, 2019, at Schriver’s Memorial Mortuary and Crematory, 414 5th Avenue NW, Aberdeen, with Pastor Mike Jacobson, of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, officiating.

Military rites will be conducted by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post #24 of Aberdeen.

A luncheon and time of fellowship will immediately follow the service at Schriver’s Memorial Fellowship Center.

Visitation at the mortuary will be 3-5 p.m., Sunday, and one hour prior to the service on Monday.

Hollis M. Anderson was born October 16, 1942, in Aitkin, MN to Ole and Marjorie (Woodcock) Anderson.  He grew up in Palisade, MN and Boyd, MN.  Hollis was raised by his Aunt Oveida and Uncles Helmer and Martin Anderson as the third generation on the family homestead in rural Boyd, which was originally settled by his grandparents from Norway.  

Following high school graduation, he worked at the Farmers Elevator in Boyd and as a contractor for Minnesota Valley out of Granite Falls, MN before beginning his forty year career with the railroad. 

Hollis enlisted in the United States Army in 1964.   He completed Basic Training at Fort Polk, LA and then spent AIT and the remaining time of his service in Fort Hood, TX as a member of the 2ndArmored Division, B Battery of the 92ndField Artillery Regiment and specialized in working with armor and chemical warfare.  Hollis proudly served his country until 1966, when he received his Honorable Discharge.  Hollis returned to Minnesota and continued working for the railroad.

Hollis was united in marriage to Anita Olson at Boyd, MN on February 13, 1971. Their union was blessed with two daughters, Stacy and Dawn.  The family resided in Montevideo, Minnesota until 1983.  They moved to Aberdeen, SD at that time and Hollis continued working with the railroad as a conductor.  He retired in November 2002, and continued to make Aberdeen his home until the time of his death.

Hollis was a proud member of the Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post #24 of Aberdeen.  In his spare time he enjoyed gardening, working in his yard, and especially helping his grandsons.  He was an avid pet lover and a very social person.  Hollis loved visiting with people and greatly enjoyed helping others out when in need.  He will be missed by many.

 Grateful to have shared in Hollis’ life are his wife, Anita Anderson of Aberdeen; his daughters, Stacy (Tim) Anderson-Baadte of Aberdeen and Dawn Anderson of Woodbury, MN; two grandsons, Andrew and Josh Anderson; his sister, Elaine Stegmaier of Agra, KS; and his brother-in-law, Stan Gustin of Aitkin, MN.

Hollis was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Joyce Gustin; and brother-in-law, Arnold Stegmaier.
