Herbert Leon Brosz was born September 30, 1945 in Alliance, NE to Herbert G. Brosz and Melvena Jeppeson. He grew up with family on the prairies of Lusk, WY, Edgemont, SD, Lodge Grass, MT, and Ashley, ND, before settling in Wilmot, SD, for high school with his Uncle and Aunt Ron and Georgia Brosz. Herb’s active imagination as a child led him on adventures and fueled an interest in learning how things operated and how he could make them better, a trait that remained throughout his life.

Herb attended Northern State College (Northern State University) and graduated in 1972 with a business degree. He enlisted in the US Army in 1965 and honorably served in Vietnam in 1966-67 as a machine-gunner attached to the 18th MP Brigade. Herb spent his entire career with Safeguard/Hub City in Aberdeen, SD, except for two years in Kendallville, IN, beginning as an accountant and working his way up to Chief Financial Officer, before retiring in 2009.

Herb married the love of his life, Patricia “Patsy” Parker, on July 4, 1986, in Watertown, SD. Together, they made Aberdeen their home, spent 37 years together, and blended a beautiful family.

Herb was a man of many hobbies and interests. At various times, he collected sports cards, stamps, and coins, and worked with model trains and planes. He enjoyed camping, watching and playing sports, and reading history. He had a long-term love of gardening, caring for his yard, and tending his countless bird feeders. He was an SDSU Extension Master Gardener and deeply involved with the Hardy Rosarians of South Dakota. Herb was a dedicated member of the American Legion, VFW, and DAV.

Herb and his wife Patsy also helped train dogs, particularly diabetic alert dogs for children and enjoyed taking therapy dogs to visit residents at area nursing homes. Herb was a quiet leader at work and in the community, serving on numerous nonprofit boards and advisory committees in Aberdeen, and investing his time and gifts in other generous ways, often without others knowing.

Herb is survived by his wife Patricia “Patsy” of 37 years; his children Heather (Paul)  Brosz White of Raleigh, NC, Erica (Ryan) Darling of Fishers, IN, Daniel (Jennifer) Brosz of Hastings, NE, and Tanner (Lisa Brown) Myers of Aberdeen, SD; his grandchildren Andrew Darling, Arianna Darling, Audra Darling, Nora White, Auden White, Hannah Brosz, Triston Brown, Phoenix Myers, Peyton Myers, and Brooklynn Lambert; motherly aunt Georgia Brosz of Rapid City, SD and sibling-like cousins Rhonda (Phil) Toft of Volga, SD and Paul (Laurie)  Brosz of Rapid City, SD.

He was preceded in death by his parents, uncle and father-figure Ron Brosz, and stepson Tyler Myers.
