Helen Vetch was born June 11, 1931 to Sebastian and Johanna (Heier) Vetch in Hillsview, SD.  She married Bernie Kopecky on June 20, 1955 in Aberdeen and they shared 53 years together until Bernie passed away in 2008.  Helen and Bernie raised four wonderful children together.  Helen cooked for the prisoners while Bernie was Sheriff of Brown County as well as raising their four children.  In the early 1970’s Helen started in the real estate business which she was in until she retired in 2001.

Helen’s children share fond memories of her gardening, baking, and family vacations with cousins.  She loved to play Chinese checkers and would always say “Just one more game!”.  Helen and Bernie enjoyed the summers out on Richmond Lake with her brother LeRoy and his wife Ann.  Her grandchildren remember her always having oatmeal cookies, her delicious cherry cheesecake, and deviled eggs.  She was so proud of her children and grandchildren.

Helen’s family feels so grateful and fortunate to have had her in their lives for so many years. She is survived by her children: Vicky (Tom) Sieben of Aberdeen, Sandra (Tim) Bergstrom of Aberdeen, Kathy (Kevin) Klein of Detroit Lakes, MN, and Greg Kopecky of Frederick, SD; sisters, Loretta Jarrett and Anna Mae (Udo) Biedermann; brother, Robert “Bobby” Vetch; sister-in-law, Ann “Annie” Vetch; seven grandchildren: Stephannie (Tom) Stiel, Tyler (Sarah) Bergstrom, Christine (Ted Lepkowski) Sieben, Kelsey (Aaron) Ankeny, Jennifer Klein, Dalton Kopecky, and Shauntaye Kopecky; 12 great grandchildren: Matthew, Abigail, Sophia, Matthew, Jillian, Lucas, Gavin, Evelyn, Haylee, Milo, Ellis, Oaklynn.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and siblings, Virginia Malsam and LeRoy Vetch.
