Harriet Lorraine Mock was born July 31, 1936, to Standford and Alice (Sundve) Mock. She grew up in the rural area around Elm Lake, SD. She attended and graduated from Ellendale High School where she graduated with the Class of 1954. During her high school years, she worked part time at a café in Ellendale where she met the love of her life, Eugene “Gene” Pence.
Harriet married Eugene “Gene” Pence in October of 1954 and moved to a farm outside of Frederick to begin their life together. They had one daughter, Patricia “Patty” and two sons: Eugene Jr. “Sunny” and Standford “Stan”. She helped on the family farm while raising their children. Harriet and Gene set an awesome example of love and marriage and had just celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary.
Once the kids were grown and gone, she went to work at the Frederick Community Store. She really enjoyed her time working at the store and having the opportunity to see family and friends on a daily basis. After retirement, she and her husband spent many of their summers camping and fishing on the Missouri River at Mobridge, SD. She enjoyed traveling to new places and meeting new friends on bus tours and kept detailed scrapbooks of her travels. She enjoyed gardening, reading, and spending time with her family. She had a special talent for writing an annual Christmas letter in poem form that everyone on her Christmas card list looked forward to reading. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church of Westport, Sacred Heart Alter Society, and the American Legion Auxiliary where she held many offices. She was involved in helping with several fundraisers over the years such as the annual Turkey Shoot put on by the Frederick Legion and the Sacred Heart Annual Chicken Dinner. She also enjoyed being a part of a local Extension Club where they worked on projects for the betterment of the community.
