Grayce Eileen Hassebroek was born February 10, 1937, the youngest of seven children, to Walter and Geertje (Luitjens) Hassebroek in Amherst, SD.  She attended Weston Consolidated School in Amherst.  Following high school graduation, Grayce worked as domestic help in several homes in Amherst.  In the spring of 1957, she moved to Aberdeen and began working at the ASC Office, where she remained employed until 1960.

Grayce was united in marriage to Arvid Beilke on November 29, 1958, at Zion Lutheran Church in Aberdeen.  Their union was blessed with three children:  Debra, Donna, and Douglas.  Grayce was an at-home mom who enjoyed being a wife and mother.  She also room and boarded college students for many years and operated a daycare for 40 years.  This allowed for many long-time friendships in her and her family’s lives.  Grayce also cared for many elderly people in her neighborhood for many years.  She retired from daycare in 1999 and during her retirement years enjoyed many church activities, doing volunteer work, and spending time with many friends.  Grayce and Arvid shared over 42 years of marriage before he passed away on October 9, 2001.  She continued to make Aberdeen her home until the time of her death.

Grayce experienced a variety of Christian denominations, being a Reformed, Lutheran, and Methodist.   She enjoyed each one in a special way.  Grayce was currently a member of First United Methodist Church, where one of her greatest joys was being involved in their bible study group, women’s circle, Sunday School and widow’s group.  In her spare time, she enjoyed doing craft work and reading.

Blessed to have shared in Grayce’s life are her children:  Donna (Myron) Veurink of Harrison, SD and Doug (Jessica) Beilke of Aberdeen; her son-in-law, Jeff Goreham of Aberdeen; eight grandchildren:  Leigha (Adam) Norman, Blake (Brittney) Veurink, Camden Veurink, Andrew Goreham, Emma Goreham, Kayla (Cyal) Lecy, James Beilke and George Beilke; six great-grandchildren:  Maddox Norman, Brynlee Veurink, Braelyn Lecy, Ava Lecy, Cadence Lecy and Coen Lecy; and many nieces, nephews, and friends, who were all very special to her.

Grayce is preceded in death by her husband, Arvid; her daughter, Debra; her parents; three sisters; and three brothers.

Grayce’s family wishes to extend a special word of thanks to the residents and staff of Parkside Apartments and to all those who have touched her life with kindness.

Condolences may be sent to:  Doug Beilke, 324 North Jay Street, Aberdeen, SD  57401.
