Gilbert Charles Garrett was born March 27th, 1930, in Britton, SD to Reggie and Alice (Perkins) Garrett. He grew up on farms near Amherst, Claremont, and Langford. He graduated from Langford High School in 1948. He was drafted and served in the US Army from January 1954 to October 1955. After the military he farmed with his father near Langford, SD.

He married Rita Dolney on September 1, 1958, in Britton, SD. To this union three sons were born: Lonnie, Michael, and Scott. In 1969 he was divorced and raised his three sons as a single father. Gilbert never remarried.

Due to drought the farm was sold in 1964, after which he worked for a large farmer near Putney. In 1966, the family moved to Aberdeen. Gilbert worked at the Starlite Truck Stop as a station attendant and then drove tanker truck for many years for Transport Inc. and Petroleum Carriers. He retired from driving truck at age 70. He later worked small part time jobs and finally fully retired from Bath Quick Stop at age 85.

Gilbert joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in December 1981. He was an active member of the congregation serving as a High Priest and Elder. The congregation was very important to him and he made many close friends.

Gilbert enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He never missed anyone’s birthday and always showed up for any of their events and gatherings. He loved to watch television rarely missing an NFL Football game, NASCAR race, or a rerun of an old Western. He filled the rest of his time reading books and his Bible.

Gilbert is survived by three sons and their families: Lonnie (Dixie) Garrett of Aberdeen, Michael (Sharon) Garrett of Aberdeen, Scott (Mary) Garrett of Sioux Falls, SD; eight grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, three sisters, and a grandson.
