Genevieve Carol Westerfield, 98, of Aberdeen, passed away Monday, December 21, 2020, at Avera Mother Joseph Manor in Aberdeen.
Her graveside committal service will be 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 2, 2021, at Riverside Cemetery in Aberdeen, with Father Michael Kapperman officiating.

Genevieve Carol Unger was born August 29, 1922, on a farm outside of Eden, SD to Henry and Magda (Skerl) Unger. She was the second oldest of four children and attended grade school in Eden before moving on to high school in Webster, SD.
Upon completion of high school, Genevieve enrolled in Nurse’s Training at Presentation College/St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen. She completed her studies in 1943 and was awarded certification as a Registered Nurse. During her long and distinguished career in the medical profession, she worked for Doctors Gerber, Bunker, and Eckrich, Sr. and Jr. She also worked briefly at St. Luke’s and taught at Presentation School of Nursing. Following retirement, she kept active doing volunteer work at St. Luke’s Hospital.
On September 14, 1943, Genevieve married Victor W. Westerfield at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eden. Their union was blessed with two children, Mark, born in 1948 and Marcia, in 1958. Genevieve and Victor celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary weeks before Victor’s passing in November of 1993. Their daughter, Marcia, passed away in 2000. Genevieve continued to reside in Aberdeen until the time of her death.
Genevieve became a member of Sacred Heart Parish in Aberdeen, SD, shortly after moving to Aberdeen. She was a lifelong member of the Altar Society, Band 8, and also sang in the choir. Following a long association with the Sisters of the Presentation Order, Genevieve became an official member of Cojourners in 2002, a connection she cherished until her passing.
Genevieve was an avid golfer and Bridge player, frequently involving herself in organizations dedicated to these pursuits.
Genevieve is survived by her son, Mark Westerfield of Milwaukee, WI; one granddaughter, Tiffany (Kevin) Reiter of Gurnee, IL; a great-grandson, Sky Reiter, also of Gurnee, IL; and one brother, Durran Unger of Fargo, ND. Survivors also include Joseph Sieling of Monterey, CA.
Genevieve was preceded in death by her husband, Victor; her daughter, Marcia; her parents; and two siblings.
