Francis James Weigel, 83, of Aberdeen, passed away Wednesday, February 28, 2018, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen.
Mass of Christian burial will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, March 5, 2018, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 409 2nd Avenue NE, Aberdeen, with Father Michael Griffin as celebrant.
Burial, with military rites, will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Aberdeen.
Schriver’s Memorial Mortuary and Crematory, 414 5th Avenue NW, Aberdeen, is in charge of arrangements. Friends may sign Francis’ online guestbook and also view his service via the live stream service link at www.schriversmemorial.com.
Visitation will be 3-5 p.m., Sunday, at the mortuary, with a liturgical wake service beginning at 5:00 p.m. Visitation continues one hour prior to Mass at the church on Monday.
Francis James Weigel was born October 1, 1934 in Bismarck, ND to Benjamin and Helen (Senger) Weigel. He lived in Ipswich, SD and attended country school. In 1947, Francis and his family moved to Aberdeen, where he attended St. Mary’s Parochial School and Aberdeen Central High School.
While in grade school, Francis helped his father at their grocery store. Following high school, he hauled gravel with his father. Francis was then employed as the Linen Supply Manager for Servall Uniform and Linen Supply for a number of years before becoming the owner of the Aberdeen Airport and Lounge.
Francis was united in marriage to Betty Schmidt on January 10, 1958 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Aberdeen by Fr. Ortenmeier. Their union was blessed with three sons.
Francis served his country on active duty with the United States Army for a short time and later with the Army National Guard until the time of his honorable discharge.
Francis and his family made their home in Aberdeen, where he most recently owned and operated Aberdeen Taxi with his son, Mark.
Francis was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and of the Army National Guard, both in Aberdeen. In his spare time he enjoyed attending car auctions.
Grateful to have shared in his life are his wife, Betty Weigel of Aberdeen; sons: Ken (Lisa and son, Justin) Weigel of Green Bay, WI and David (Theresa) Weigel of Watertown, SD; daughter-in-law, Marcie Weigel of Aberdeen; one brother, Ray (Caroline) Weigel of California; one sister, Sylvia Rott of Leola, SD; and many nieces and nephews.
Francis is preceded in death by one son, Mark Weigel; his parents, Benjamin and Helen Weigel; and two brothers, Jerome and Victor Weigel.
Pallbearers will be Victor Weigel, Nick Rayman, Mark Hofer, Keith Schumacher, Dennis Moser and Don Weigel.
