Eugene Harold Pence was born May 20, 1928, to Frank and Anna (Voeller) Pence. He grew up on a farm outside of Frederick. He attended Frederick High School, graduating with the Class of 1947. Upon graduating, Gene helped on the family farm until entering the United States Army in 1951. He completed two years of service. He then returned to the Frederick area and began his farming career.
He met the love of his life while visiting a café in Ellendale, ND, where his wife to be, Harriet, was working part-time as a waitress. Gene married Harriet Mock in October of 1954 and moved to a farm outside of Frederick where they began their life together. They had one daughter, Patricia “Patty” and two sons: Eugene Jr. “Sunny” and Standford “Stan”.
Gene was a farmer through and through – spending many hours raising cattle and tending crops. To supplement the family income during the fall and winter months, he spent many hours trapping and harvesting furs. He was a pilot and used the plane to hunt fox and coyotes. He also loved to give rides in the summer. Gene had an artistic talent for drawing and put that talent to work sculpting, with scissors and sheers, beautiful artwork on stretched beaver furs to be hung on the wall. He loved to hunt and fish. After retiring from active farming, he and his wife enjoyed many summers camping and fishing on the Missouri River at Mobridge, SD. Gene and Harriet shared 66 years of marriage before she passed away, just three days earlier, on November 13, 2020.
Gene had a sense of humor and loved to tell a good (or bad) joke and pull tricks on unsuspecting targets. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church of Westport and American Legion Post #273. He was involved in helping with several fundraisers over the years such as the annual Turkey Shoot put on by the Frederick Legion and the Sacred Heart Annual Chicken Dinner. One of Gene’s favorite things to do around Christmas was to make homemade oyster stew and invite relatives and friends to join him and Harriet at their home to enjoy. For those not a fan of the stew there would be egg rolls or pizza and of course plates of homemade goodies for dessert. Many laughs and stories were shared around this annual meal and it was looked forward to by all.
Grateful for having shared Gene’s life are his sons, Eugene Jr. “Sunny” (Stacey) Pence of Aberdeen and Standford “Stan” (Suzette) Pence of Yankton; one grandson, Baxter Pence; one sister, Dorothy Lahr of Aberdeen; and one brother, Robert Pence of Frederick; sisters-in-law, Beverly Raymond and Alise Goosela of Bend, OR; and many loved nieces and nephews.
Gene was preceded in death by his wife; one daughter; his parents; step-mother; two sisters-in-law; and four brothers-in-law.
