Following graduation, Earl enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving on the USS Nashville during WWII. He met General Douglas MacArthur while General MacArthur and his staff were being transported to several locations.

Earl was a devout Roman Catholic and attended St. Mary’s Parish in Aberdeen and St. Frances Cabrini in Spring Hill.
