Delmar Wahl Obituary

Delmar O. Wahl, 90, of Aberdeen, and formerly of Leola, SD, passed away Wednesday, November 11, 2020, at his home.

His funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, November 19, 2020, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 1429 North Dakota St, Aberdeen, with Pastor Leland Armbright officiating.

Burial, with military rites, will take place at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Aberdeen.

Schriver’s Memorial Mortuary & Crematory, 414 5th Avenue NW, Aberdeen, is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church on Thursday.

Delmar Oryhus Wahl was born September 5, 1930, in a sod house in Java, SD to Carl H. and Johanna (Neifer) Wahl.  He attended country school near Leola, SD, in McPherson County, graduating from the 8th grade.

Delmar moved from Java to Eureka, SD in 1940 and resided there until 1941, when he moved to the family farm near Leola.

Delmar was drafted into the United States Army in 1952 and served his country in the Korean War until he was honorably discharged in 1954.  He then returned to Leola and made farming his life.

Delmar married Delores Sandmeier in Aberdeen, SD in 1975.  They lived on the family farm in rural Leola.  

In September of 1988, Delmar moved to Aberdeen.  He was united in marriage to Mary Ann Maisch on September 9, 1988, in Aberdeen, where the couple continued to make their home.

Delmar was a member of the VFW and American Legion.  After moving to Aberdeen, he also joined the Moose Lodge and Fraternal Order of Eagles.  Delmar was an avid Minnesota Twins Fan.  He was also a loyal supporter of Northern State University athletics and especially enjoyed attending NSU Wolves basketball games.  Delmar enjoyed traveling and going on bus tours with Mary Ann.  They loved polka dancing and together traveled to many Polka Festivals in North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota.

Grateful for sharing Delmar’s life is his wife of 32 years, Mary Ann Maisch of Aberdeen; stepsons:  Douglas Maisch of Aberdeen, Gregory Maisch of Weeping Waters, NE, Thomas Maisch of Aberdeen and Jeffrey Maisch of Hutchinson, MN; stepdaughter, Kristi (Seth) Ferguson of Omaha, NE; grandchildren:  Jaggar Ferguson, Andrew Ferguson and Taryn Ferguson; two brothers, Stanley Wahl of Pierre, SD and Jerome Wahl of Aberdeen; and one sister, Shirley Wahl of Sioux Falls, SD.

Delmar was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Johanna; one brother in infancy and one sister, Leone.
