Daniel Lee Pennington was born on January 9, 1940, in Corning, Iowa, to Roy and Vera (Rhine) Pennington. He was born and raised in Corning until he and his family moved to Denver, Colorado when he was 15.

After school, Daniel enlisted in the United States Army and served in Vietnam. He was honorable discharged and returned to Denver.

Daniel married Bernice Vetter on July 12, 1972, in Denver, CO, and the couple moved to Aberdeen in 1974. He was employed with Devries Dairy and drove the milk truck. Later, he worked as a cook at Northern State University and Avera St. Luke’s Hospital. Daniel retired in 2002 and continued to make Aberdeen his home.

Daniel was proud of his service in the Army and honored that part of his life by being a part of the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion, and the Disabled American Veterans. He was also an avid rock collector and enjoyed 3D puzzles and fishing in his free time.

Grateful for having shared Daniel's life are his wife, Bernice; three daughters, Michelle (Jay) Guinn, of Washington State, Regina (Pieter) Colyn of South Carolina, and Tiffany (Ed) Johnson of Iowa; one son, Dan (Darla) Mason of Kansas and Branden Abeln who was like a son to Daniel; and nine grandchildren: Katryna Guinn, Tysen Guinn, Ivy-Marie Pennington, Dani-Lea Pennington, Bianca Colyn, Jeanne Colyn, Riley Colyn, Tevin Abeln, and Axel Abeln.

Daniel was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters; two brothers; and his daughter, Marie.
