Carol Ann Sherman, 78, of Aberdeen, SD passed away Saturday, July 24, 2021 at Avera Heart Hospital of South Dakota, Sioux Falls, SD.
Funeral Service is at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 31, 2021, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Aberdeen, with Pastor Jeff Whillock officiating.
Burial is at Britton Cemetery, Britton, SD.
Visitation is 5:00-7:00 p.m., Friday, at the mortuary with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation continues one hour before the service at the church.

Carol Ann Hoikkala was born November 21, 1942 to Everett B. and Lucille Minnie (Bocker) Hoikkala in Britton, SD. Her childhood was spent in the Britton area and on a farm near Ludden, ND. Carol attended grade school in Ludden, ND, Britton, SD, and Simmons and Henry Neil in Aberdeen. She then attended Monroe Junior High. Carol’s family spent three years in Santa Ana, CA before moving back to South Dakota. During her junior and senior years in high school Carol worked at the Britton Hospital as a nurse’s aide. Carol graduated from Britton High School.
Carol was united in marriage to Richard A. Moerke on May 22, 1960. They farmed near Britton and to this union four children were born: Brenda, Laurie, Jeff, and Jodi. In 1973, Carol moved to Aberdeen. She worked cleaning homes and apartments. After graduating from Aberdeen School of Commerce in 1977, she began working for the Brown County Health Department. From 1982 to 1987 she worked at Dakota Midland Hospital. In August of 1985 Carol married Roger E. Sherman. Carol began working for the Brown County Register of Deeds office in June, 1987 and was elected Register of Deeds in 1998. She continued working there until she retired in July of 2018.
Carol loved to travel and saw all of the continental United States, Hawaii, Canada, and the Bahamas. She enjoyed spending time with family and loved cooking and baking for them. Carol also spent time learning to quilt and doing counted cross-stitch. She especially enjoyed taking care of her many pet cats and doing the daily crossword.
Grateful for having shared Carol’s life are her children: Brenda (Tom) Grote of Aberdeen, Laurie (Ron) Wagner of Mina, SD, Jeff (Penny) Moerke of Hampshire, IL, and Jodi (Dean) Wagner of Mina, SD; siblings: Doug Hoikkala of Aberdeen, Kathy (Richard) Meyer of Selby, S.D., and Donald Hoikkala of Champaign, Ill; grandchildren: Tara, Matt, Travis, Alex, Tyler, Katie, Jen, and Kyle; and great grandchildren: Azzi, Indi, Doug, and Fox.
Carol was preceded in death by her husbands, Richard A. Moerke and Roger E. Sherman, and her parents, Everett and Lucille Hoikkala.
