Jerry was born to Martin and Ruby (Tangeman) Nesseim on December 18, 1936, in Lake Preston, SD.  At an early age, the family moved to Ida Grove, IA.  Jerry graduated from Ida Grove High School in 1955.

In October of 1955, Jerry enlisted in the United States Army and spent 17 months in the 724th Ordnance Maintenance Company, 24th Infantry Division in Korea.  Upon returning to the states, Jerry spent a year at Fort Carson, CO, before being honorably discharged from the Army in 1958.

Jerry married Mary Lou Wolterman on August 1, 1959, in Ida Grove.  The couple moved to Vermillion, SD, where Jerry was enrolled at the University of South Dakota.  Their first child, Kathy, was born on August 29, 1961, at the university.  Jerry graduated in May of 1962 with a degree in business management.  The family then moved to Huron, SD, where Jerry was employed with Rushmore Credit Corporation.  Their second child, Greg, was born in Huron on September 16, 1965.  In 1967, Jerry resigned from Rushmore Credit Corporation and the family moved to Aberdeen, SD, where he began employment with the Internal Revenue Service.  He was employed with the IRS until retirement.  In 1971, the family purchased a cabin at Pickerel Lake, which had been, and will continue to be, enjoyed by the family for many years to come.  Tragedy hit the family in 1992, when Mary Lou was diagnosed with breast cancer.  Treatment with high dose chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant at the University Hospital in Denver, CO, were not successful and she passed away on July 17, 1992.  In 2014, Jerry’s son, Greg, also passed away.  Jerry continued to live near his daughter and son-in-law and make Aberdeen his home until the time of his death.

Jerry was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Veteran of Foreign Wars, American Legion Post 24, AARP, NARFE, and the Pickerel Lake South Shore Association.

Grateful for having shared Jerry’s life is his daughter, Kathy (Adam) Heyd of Aberdeen; his grandson, Justin (Hannah) Heyd of Sioux Falls, SD; and one great-grandson, Marshall Heyd.
