Beverly Jean (Abramson) Halvorson Ackerman

Beverly Jean Halvorson Ackerman, 89, of Columbia, SD and formerly of Aberdeen, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, June 10, 2020, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen due to heart disease.

Her wishes were to be cremated and her memorial service will be 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 16, 2020, at Columbia Congregational Church, 301 North Broadway Street, Columbia, SD, with Father Richard Zephier officiating.

Burial will take place at the Hecla Cemetery in Hecla, SD at a later date.

Schriver’s Memorial Mortuary and Crematory, 414 5th Avenue NW, Aberdeen, is handling arrangements.

Beverly Jean Abramson was born July 6, 1930, to Carl Oscar and Stella Ann (Krumm) Abramson in Slayton, MN, where she grew up. 

Following graduation from Slayton High School, Beverly received training in Medical Technology in Texas before beginning work at St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen.  She furthered her education at Northern State College in Aberdeen and received her Bachelor’s Degree in Science with a teaching certificate.  Beverly then taught classes at Presentation College in Aberdeen.

Beverly was united in marriage to Andrew Thomson on March 11, 1950.  Their union was blessed with three children:  Holly, Lee, and Edward.  She married Elvin “Al” Halvorson on May 2, 1960.  Beverly then was united in marriage to Richard Ackerman on February 3, 1987. 

Beverly enjoyed volunteering and was very involved with work at her church, foster care of infants, tax aid for seniors, SHINE, and as a census taker.  She also enjoyed sewing and being a member of the Quilting Guild at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church.

Grateful for sharing in Beverly’s life are her children:  Holly (Cliff) Chapman of Eagle River, AK, Lee (Carol) Halvorson of Sioux Falls, SD and Ed (Debbie) Halvorson of Harvard, NE, stepchildren: Daniel (Melanie) Ackerman and Steven (Kris) Ackerman, both of Columbia, SD, Wayne (Tammie) Ackerman, Brian (Sue) Ackerman, Jon (Krista) Ackerman, Doug (Tammie) and Helen Hardy, seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and one sister, Alma Asbell of Owatonna, MN.

Beverly is preceded in death by her husbands, her parents, and one sister, Dorothy.
