Betty Mae Swanson was born February 13, 1932, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, to Frederick and Elizabeth (Hagel) Swanson. She lived on the family farm near Warner until the family moved to Aberdeen so that she could attend school. Betty attended Sacred Heart School until ninth grade. She then attended Central High School and graduated in 1950.
Betty worked at Avera St. Luke’s office and switchboard during high school and college at Northern State University. She received a Bachelor’s Degree in Classroom Education and continued to Boulder Colorado University for additional schooling.
Upon finishing schooling in Colorado, Betty returned to Aberdeen to teach for two years in Aberdeen grade schools. Betty moved to Japan and taught for another two years at the Gifu Airbase. After many adventures in Japan, she moved home to Aberdeen once again. Betty loved teaching, and her adventures always brought her satisfaction and joy.
Along her many adventures, Betty met Don Artz and they were married July 25, 1959, in Aberdeen, SD. To this union two sons were born, Paul and Steve. Betty said, “Steve helped me through aging and Paul kept me aware of the world around me.”
She was always involved in the city, church, and social committees. She loved teaching and helping others always. Betty wanted to say thank you for all the friendships, partners in her work, and patience of her friends – the kindness and help leveled her life.
Grateful for having shared Betty’s life are her sons, Steve Artz and Paul Artz.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 2011.
