William W. Whiteside, 82, of Aberdeen, passed away Wednesday, January 21, 2015, at Golden Living Center-Groton.
His memorial service will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 26, 2015, at Schriver's Memorial Mortuary & Crematory, 414 5th Avenue NW, Aberdeen, with Father Mike Kelly, Celebrant.
A luncheon and time of fellowship will immediately follow the service at Schriver's Memorial Fellowship Center.
William's wishes were to be cremated with burial with military rites taking place at Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery in Aberdeen at a later date.
Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Monday at the mortuary.
Memorials are preferred to the Aberdeen Area Humane Society or The Salvation Army.
William Wade Whiteside was born May 20, 1932, in Aberdeen, SD, to Dr. Jesse D. and Ethel Camille (Matlick) Whiteside. He was raised and attended school in Aberdeen. Following graduation from Aberdeen Central High School, William continued his education at Northern State College in Aberdeen, where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree. While attending college, William enlisted in the United States Army On October 1, 1953 and served his country until receiving his Honorable Discharge on August 3, 1955.
William was united in marriage to Mary Ann Ocel on June 6, 1953, at Minneapolis, MN. The couple made their home in Aberdeen, where William worked as Pharmaceutical Salesman for Parke-Davis. During his 35-year career with them, William was honored as Salesman of the Year.
William was very involved in his children's activities. He was a lifetime member of the PTA and also a Cub Scout Leader for several years, during which time he was named South Dakota Scout Leader of the Year for three years.
William enjoyed traveling and was also an avid fisherman and hunter. He was a founding member of the Aberdeen Gun Club and Trapshooting Club and also a member of The Brown County Sportsman Club. William loved animals and held a special place in his heart for his pet dogs. We celebrate his memory and may God welcome him home.
Grateful to have shared William's life is his wife of 61 years, Mary Ann Whiteside of Aberdeen; his children: William (Sheri) Whiteside, II, of Aberdeen, Linda Chappell of Mobridge, SD, Patricia Whiteside of Des Moines, IA and Jerome (Kathy) Whiteside of Buffalo, MN; five grandchildren: Jesse (Amie) Whiteside, Jordan (Ashley) Whiteside, William Whiteside III, Shane Whiteside and Zachary Chappell; one great-grandchild, Jackson Whiteside; numerous nieces and nephews; special family friends, Paul & Sharon Hanna of Aberdeen; and a very special group of life-long dinner friends.
William is preceded in death by his parents, and three sisters: Mary Miller, Jane Backlund and Ann Gertsen.
