William “Bill” Cantwell, 84, of Westport, SD, passed away Tuesday, April 10, 2018, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen.

Mass of Christian burial will be 10:00 am, Saturday, April 21, 2018, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Westport, SD.

Visitation will be Friday, April 20, from 5:00-7:00 pm with a Liturgical Wake service at 7:00 pm at Schriver’s Memorial Mortuary, Aberdeen.

Interment will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Westport.

Schriver’s Memorial Mortuary and Crematory, Aberdeen, is handling arrangements.

Bill Cantwell was born November 16, 1933, to James and Irene (Callaghan) Cantwell in Aberdeen, SD.  He was raised on a farm near Barnard, SD, and attended school there.  Bill graduated with the Class of 1951.  After graduating, Bill lived and worked on the family farm, eventually taking it over.  Bill was united in marriage to LaRue Hastings on October 20, 1956 in Westport.  They continued to live on the farm and raise four children: Karen, Kelly, Charlie, and Dan.  Bill farmed for 25 years and then sold machinery for 20 years.

Bill and LaRue enjoyed going to dances, church events, and loved spending time with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Bill was in charge of the Westport Cemetery for over 30 years and spent countless hours managing and maintaining the cemetery. He loved helping people get what they needed for plots and gravestones and took pride in improving the cemetery however he could.  He also helped with the maintenance of the Sacred Heart Church for many years..  Bill also enjoyed collecting and teaching his grandchildren about IHC Farmall tractors and equipment.

Bill is survived by his children: Karen Goodall of Aberdeen, Kelly (Wayne) Tisher of Lake City, Charlie (Teresa) Cantwell of Hudson, CO, and Dan (Mary) Cantwell of Roseville, MN; sister, Elaine (Earl) Schulenberg; two sisters-in-law, Jean Cantwell and Dolly Evans; 13 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his wife, parents, brothers: Joe, Pat, Leo, and Jack; and sister, Jean Lurton.
