Viola L. (Bartz) Stange

Viola L. Stange, 106, of Aberdeen, passed away Thursday, September 12, 2019, at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Her funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, September 19, 2019, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 214 7th Avenue SW, Aberdeen, with Pastor Samuel Bobby and Pastor Josiah Fitch officiating.

Burial will take place at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Aberdeen.

Schriver’s Memorial Mortuary and Crematory, 414 5th Avenue NW, Aberdeen, is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, at the mortuary, with a public prayer service beginning at 7:00 p.m.  Visitation continues one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

Viola Louise Marie Bartz, daughter of Otto and Anna (Hennam) Bartz, was born May 1, 1913, on the family farm near Stratford, SD.  She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran parsonage in Aberdeen by Reverend Graeber.

On February 15, 1933, Viola was united in marriage to Hubert Stange at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Aberdeen with Reverend Graeber officiating.  To their union, a son and a daughter were born.

In addition to being a farm wife and mother, Viola also worked in the Dietary Department at James Valley Nursing Home for 11 years after retiring from farming.

In 1994, Viola & Hubert made their home at Primrose Retirement Home in Aberdeen. Viola remained there until 2014, when she became a resident at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen, where she continued to reside until the time of her death.

Viola enjoyed spending time with family.  Her husband, children, and their families held a special place in her heart.

Viola is survived by her daughter, Darlene A. Wahl of Aberdeen; daughter-in-law, Wanda Stange of Sioux Falls, SD; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 20 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Viola was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert, on New Year’s Eve of 2000; her son, Leon Stange; grandson, Keith Wahl; son-in-law, Durwood Wahl; her parents, Otto and Anna; brother, Rudy Bartz; sister, Myrtle Funston; her half-sister, Esther; and four half-brothers: Bill, Emil, Arthur, and Walter Bartz.
