Viola Carolyn Barth was delivered at home on December 28, 1927, by her maternal grandmother in Holloway, MN, to Charles and Anna (Behrens) Barth. She was the fourth of ten children. With many chores of household and farm, they were a very close family, along with their aunts and uncles.
On July 17, 1947, Viola married Elwin R. Bahl and created a family of five girls. During their 30 years together, they lived in Erdahl, MN, Hutchinson, MN, Montevideo, MN, and Aberdeen, SD. She was involved with Catholic Daughters Association, Women of the Moose, and Women’s League Bowling. During the raising of her family, she was always involved in her girls’ activities as Brownie & Girl Scout Leader, and many after school and church events. As her family grew, she began waitressing at the Virginia Café alongside her daughters. After the passing of her husband, Elwin, she began a working career as a sales person at the Coast-to-Coast Store and then was a loyal employee at Shopko for 27 years, retiring at the age of 84.
Viola always loved cooking many meals for the family gatherings. She was known for the wonderful aromas coming from her kitchen, and all were welcome at her table. Viola also enjoyed bowling, crafts, gardening, and canning in her younger years. Family was the most important part of her life and she enjoyed traveling to visit them and their special events. Viola always enjoyed a good car ride with her friend Joe, or one of her daughters.
Viola is survived by her daughters: Joy (Floyd) Schweigert of Aberdeen, Brenda (Neill) Dobler of Topeka, KS, Kathleen (Jim) Morken of Mitchell, SD, and Kimberly (Brad) Nack of Sioux Falls, SD; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Leona Winkleman; two brothers, Walter (Ollie) Barth and Fred (Rosemary) Barth; and her close friend of 36 years, Joe Lacher.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elwin; her daughter, Deborah; her maternal and paternal parents; four brothers, and two sisters.
