Vernon Walth was born on the family farm three and a half miles east of Hosmer to Edwin and Alma (Guthmiller) Walth on March 9, 1932. He attended the NE Sangamon Township School for eight years and graduated from Hosmer High School in May of 1950. He farmed with his father after graduation.

On November 1, 1953, he married Verna Wiederrich. Together, they moved to a neighboring farm and farmed there until October of 1956, at which time they took over the family farm upon his parents’ retirement. Six children were born to this union: Robert, Michael, Valerie, Patricia, Susanne, and Karen.

Vernon was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hosmer. He was a Sunday School teacher, choir, and council member. He also served on the Cenex board of directors, elevator board, and Hosmer Fire District. He also served on the board of directors for Thrivent.

He enjoyed restoring old farm tractors, traveling, spending time with the grandkids, and singing, which led him to join the Aberdeen Friendship Singers.

In 2015, Vernon retired from the farm and moved to Aberdeen. Since 2024, he resided at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Grateful for having shared Vernon’s life is his wife, Verna, of 72 years; children: Robert (Glenda) Walth, Michael Walth, Valerie Richardson, Patricia (Raymond) Frydenlund, Susanne (Richard) Steenholdt, and Karen (Barry) Jetton; 8 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; 4 step-great-grandchildren; and 4 step-great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Milton; sister-in-law, Margaret; daughter-in-law, Patricia Walth; and son-in-law, Bill Richardson.
