Sherwin Schwab was born January 19, 1955, in Aberdeen to Florian and Arlene (Ihde) Schwab. Sherwin was raised on the family farm south of Mina, SD, and had fond memories attending First Grade at Happy Corner, which was located on the family farm homestead. He graduated from Warner High School in 1973, where he made many friends that lasted a lifetime.
After high school, he began his farming career alongside his dad, while also driving school bus for the Warner School and working at Honest John’s, where he met John Lindquist who would become a lifelong friend. He also worked at Mel’s Harley Davidson for a while.
In 1975, Sherwin went to The Depot in Aberdeen with some friends and he met a girl named Judy Lowitz who was attending Northern State College. They went on their first date in 1976 to Helen’s California Kitchen, and it was the only day it rained that year. They went on to get married on January 27, 1979, during a blizzard. Sherwin and Judy made their home on the family farm and welcomed their three children: Angie, Sheldon, and Steven.
Sherwin farmed his whole life, teaching his kids the ropes. He was so proud to watch his son, Sheldon, and grandson, Jace continue to farm the land. Sherwin learned his love of hunting from his dad, Florian. As a teenager, he would help guide pheasant hunters from Indiana. As he got older, he took over the guiding and had many groups from different states each year. He loved to have them over to the house and serve his prime rib. Sherwin always loved to cook for friends and family. There were many great gatherings on Mina Lake with awesome food and even better company. His meatballs were a favorite of many.
As the years went on, his greatest honor was being a grandpa. Sherwin would often talk about things his grandkids did. He was proud of all of them. A favorite of theirs would be asking him to buy them a Shirley Temple. He would make sure to get them extra cherries.
We will miss his smile, laugh, and sometimes his advice. I’m sure the guys at the farm are already missing his daily phone calls. He was a good friend to many and was always willing to help someone out.
Grateful for sharing Sherwin’s life are his wife Judy of 46 years; daughter Angie (Chad) Vetter; son Sheldon (Hillary Plucker) Schwab; grandkids Carstyn (Kaydence Stenson) Vetter, Jace (Kyra Marcuson) Schwab, Anna Schwab, Adyson Vetter, Ally Schwab, Creightyn Vetter, Sawyer Craig, Huxley Craig, and Dawson Plucker; sister Sharla Ulrich; sister-in -law Teresa (Tim) Flannery; nephew Brenen (April) Ulrich; nieces Carissa (Matt) Naasz, and Jackie (Steve) Houghtaling; his crew from Mina Lake, and many other friends he met along the way.
Sherwin was preceded in death by his parents, Florian and Arlene Schwab; brother Steven, who passed away at the age of 2; his son Steven; his in-laws Martin and Wanda Lowitz; his brothers-in-law Bob Ulrich and Tim Lowitz, Allen Munger; his grandparents, many aunts, uncles, cousins, and many of his good friends.
The family would like to thank Jon, Tori, and all of the staff at Avera McKennan for the compassion you showed to our family last week. You went above and beyond, and we are grateful.
