Roberta Johnson was born on January 3, 1944, to William and Norma (Kuehl) Johnson in Aberdeen. She was raised on the family farm near Sitka, SD. She was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith. The oldest of five children, she was raised as a hard worker and helped with the farm and livestock chores.

Roberta graduated from Glenham High School in 1962 and went to work at the Trail Café in Mobridge, SD, where she met the love of her life, Marvin “Buzz” Perman. In 1963, she went to work at Northwestern Bell Telephone. In 1964, Roberta married “Buzz” Perman, and they moved to Aberdeen, where they made their home.

Buzz started up Aero-Dyna-Kleen Services, and the couple ran the business together until his passing in 2006. Roberta worked for Avera in the Cafeteria until she was forced to retire due to the loss of eyesight in her left eye caused by temporal arteritis. She endured many doctor appointments and trips to Sioux Falls.

Roberta enjoyed cooking and baking, always taking her baked goods to friends, family, and neighbors. She also enjoyed gardening, canning, and spending time with her grandchildren. Separation during the covid pandemic was difficult on Roberta, as she enjoyed the closeness of family and friends. It was tough for her not to be able to share her love through hugs.

Grateful for having shared Roberta’s life are her children: Mark (Jane) Perman of Aberdeen, SD, Milissa (Lyn) Fliehs of Redfield, SD, Kristi (Lance) Burns of Westport, SD, and Josh (Nicole) Perman of Hawley, MN; one brother William Brooks (Carol) Johnson; one sister Ione Enderson; brother-in-law Topper Thorstenson and sisters-in-law Judy Thorstenson and Mary Ann Faehnrich; aunt, Mae Johnson of Lead, SD; many nieces and nephews; grandchildren: Shelden (Tasha) Gross, Jorden Gross (Gabby), Jayden Gross (Darren), Mitchell (Savanna) Perman, Michael Perman (Reaghan), Gage Burns,  Caden, Averi, and Jaxton Perman; and great-grandchildren Nash Gross and Mia Perman.

Roberta was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Buzz; granddaughter, Shelby Fay Gross (1997); and two brothers, Forrest and Arwood Johnson.
