Robert Lloyd Wendt, 89, of Aberdeen, passed away Sunday, February 16, 2014, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen, with his family at his side.

His memorial service will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 21, 2014, at Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ, 431 West Melgaard Road, Aberdeen, with Pastor Jill K. Warner, officiating.

It was Robert's wishes to be cremated with burial taking place at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Aberdeen.

Schriver's Memorial Mortuary and Crematory, 414 5th Avenue NW, Aberdeen, is in charge of arrangements.

Robert Lloyd Wendt was born on March 27, 1924, on a farm southwest of Aberdeen, in Brown County, to Herman and Sophia (Luikens) Wendt. He attended Riverside Grade School in Aberdeen Township and graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in 1942. Robert then began farming with his dad and brother, Atlas.

Bob's baseball career began with Aberdeen Legion Baseball. He played in many state tournaments beginning with an Aberdeen Legion team in 1941 and then with the Mina and Westport Amateur teams. Bob was selected as an All-State Outfielder in 1946.

Robert was united in marriage to Beverly Williams of Ipswich, SD, on November 12, 1947 in Aberdeen. After renting several farms, they settled in the Wetonka, SD area in 1954. Bob loved farm life and enjoyed working with livestock, especially his horses and cattle. He could be seen frequently checking his cattle pastures and hay fields during the summer months.

He served on several boards including the Board of Supervisors of the Edmunds County Soil Conservation District for nine years, a Community Committeeman and a County Committeeman for the ASC office, a Pembrook Township Supervisor for 40 years, and an Edmunds County Commissioner from 1970 through 1978. He was also a lifetime member of Aberdeen Lodge No 590 Loyal Order Of Moose, 590.

Grateful for having shared Bob's life is his wife, Beverly of Aberdeen; three daughters: Barbara (Jerald) Braun of Wetonka, SD, Jo Ann Koerner of Sioux Falls, SD and Jodi (Arnie) Zacher of Yankton, SD; 13 grandchildren: Robert (Dulce) Braun, Jason (Michelle) Braun, Megan (Cole Tucker) Braun, Mindi Koerner, Levi (Renee) Koerner, Jesse Koerner, Cody Koerner, Caleb Koerner, Andi (Jay) Waldow, Tonisha Koerner, Austin Koerner, Carli Al-Azzeh, and Austin Zacher; eight great-grandchildren: Dawson, Jazmine, Oscar, Trenton, Sheldon, Tate, Aubrey and Aryia; one brother, Atlas Wendt: one sister, Hazel (Don) Schaunaman; and many nieces and nephews.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Helen Hansen; and one brother in infancy.
