Robert Fitch, affectionately known as “Pappy” in his later years, was born on March 2, 1939, in Hardin, MT, to Elwin and Jean (White) Fitch. He spent his childhood in Hardin and enlisted in the United States Navy in 1956. He served on the USS Shangri-la Aircraft Carrier for four years and was honorably discharged in 1960.

Following his discharge, Robert returned to Montana and started truck driving and custom combining. He met Rachel Bietz, and they were united in marriage on September 17, 1975, in Ft. Benton, Montana, and made their home in Great Falls, Montana. Two children were born into this union: Robert Jr. and Holly.

Robert re-enlisted in the Navy in 1980 and served for 15 years as a heavy equipment operator until being honorably discharged again in 1995. The family then moved to Veblen, South Dakota, and at that time, Robert started working in the construction field. A short time later, Robert decided he wanted to further his education, so he attended the North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton, ND. He received a degree in small engine repair.

Pappy later retired, and in his retirement, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, spending time outdoors, woodworking, leather working, and especially dirt track racing. He even served as the mayor of Veblen for some time!

Grateful for having shared Pappy’s life are his wife of 49 years, Rachel; children: Robert Fitch Jr. and Holly (Luis) Chavez; three grandchildren: Jasmine Chavez, Chevy Chavez, and Luis Chavez Jr.; and three great-grandchildren: Miliah Chavez, Lucas Chavez, and Brixton Seeyle.

Pappy was preceded in death by his parents, Elwin and Jean; one infant son, John; sister, Linda; and brother, Sid.
