Richard Peter Schwan was born November 9, 1935 in Aberdeen to Julius and Katherine (Franzen) Schwan. He grew up and attended school in Aberdeen. On January 13, 1952 he entered into the United States Marine Corps, where he served honorably during the Korean War until his honorable discharge on June 2, 1955. Following his service he worked in soil conservation and later as a break man for the railroad. He then moved to Milwaukee where he worked for American Motor Cars in the upholstery department. Following this he went to school for Television and then later for welding. After welding school he worked for Bradley Welco as the maintenance man until the plant closed, at which time he took an early retirement and moved back to Aberdeen after being gone for 30 years.

Richard was an early riser and always made sure to make 6 a.m. coffee at McDonalds, and then 3 p.m. coffee with his brother Michael. He enjoyed relaxing by watching Westerns on TV, and watching the Vikings, Twins, Green Bay Packers, and the Red Sox, as that was his favorite baseball team. He also enjoyed watching Northern football and basketball, and feeding the birds.

Grateful for having shared in Dick's life is his brother, Michael Schwan of Aberdeen, and his many friends. His parents preceded Dick into death.
