After schooling, he worked as a hired hand on the Leroy Krage ranch northwest of Aberdeen. He held various jobs around Leola, and in 1963 moved to Minneapolis to become a body technician and machinist. In 1967, he moved to Aberdeen and worked for Larson Lee Body Shop. From there he worked for Multi-State Builders as a trouble shooter, traveling to seven states. He later went to work for the Brown County Highway Department, and was employed there for twenty years. Richard enjoyed pheasant hunting, playing cards, and fishing with family, but most of all enjoyed his trips to Akaska, catching walleye with his cousin Cleo and her husband Merv. Las Vegas was his natural second home and he took several trips there, spending the winter months with family after he retired.
