Norma Lee (Ketterling) Kale

Aberdeen, SD, and formerly Verona, ND

Norma L. Kale, Aberdeen, SD, and formerly Verona, ND, passed away Sunday, December 6, 2020, one day before her 81st birthday, at Avera Mother Joseph Manor in Aberdeen, following a long struggle with Parkinson’s disease.

Mass of Christian burial, for immediate family only , will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, December 14, 2020, at St. Raphael’s Catholic Church, 205 1st Street, Verona, with Father Gregory Haman, Celebrant.

Burial will be open to the public and will take place at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Cemetery in Verona, followed by a luncheon and time of fellowship at Bear Creek Lodge.

Schriver’s Memorial Mortuary and Crematory, 414 5th Avenue NW, Aberdeen, is in charge of arrangements.

Norma Lee Ketterling was born December 7, 1939, to Peter and Lydia (Just) Ketterling near LaMoure, North Dakota.  Norma grew up in a large family being the fourteenth of sixteen children.  She attended grade school in Grand Rapids, ND until the family moved to LaMoure, ND, where she graduated high school.

LaMoure is also where she met William Kale and they married on November 2, 1957.  They later moved to a farm near Verona, North Dakota, where they stayed until moving to Aberdeen in 2008.  While on the farm, Norma was very busy raising their five children and working around the farm.

Norma enjoyed maintaining her large garden and cooking and baking for her family.  She was active in St. Raphael’s Catholic Church with Ladies Aid and teaching Catechism.  Norma was a member of a bowling league for many years and also enjoyed playing Pinochle and board games with her family and friends.  She rarely missed an episode of Jeopardy or Wheel of Fortune.

Blessed to have shared Norma’s life is her husband of 63 years, William Kale of Aberdeen; her children:  Rory (Jeanette Lee) Kale, Brent (Kristine) Kale, Roxanne (Jeff) Johnson, Jeff (Janee) Kale and Beth (Jordan) Day, 11 grandchildren:  David Kale, Ryan Kale, Joshua Kale, Matthew Kale, Sarah Kale, Nathan Kale, Erica Kale, April Johnson, Andrea Johnson, Kalen Day and Alexandra Day; five great-grandchildren:  Madilynn, Kaydence, Colton, Ryland and Tessa; and four siblings:  Katherine, Wilbert, Raymond and Sarah.

Norma was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Lydia; seven brothers:  Oscar, Ben, Erwin, John, Herbert, Elmer and Albert; and four sisters:  Lenore, Ellen, Ester and Irene.
