Micheal “Mike” Fred Krause was born on September 8, 1965, in Aberdeen, SD, to Larry and Gwen (Palmer) Krause. Mike grew up on the family farm in Mansfield, where he worked alongside his family until moving to Aberdeen to live with his Krause grandparents. He had the special honor of participating in the 1986 South Dakota Special Olympics at Ellsworth Air Force Base, where he received his medal from Eunice Kennedy Shriver.
Mike attended the School of Hope at Lincoln Elementary School, graduating in 1987. A few years later, he entered the care and supervision of Aspire, where he found meaningful support, purpose, and community. Through Aspire, Mike enjoyed participating in numerous local and state Special Olympics events, and he reached one of the pinnacles of his life when he competed in the 1999 World Special Olympics as a member of the South Dakota State basketball team. Mike had a great interest in sports and collecting sports cards.
That same year, Mike was deeply honored when his artwork, a painting of a Christmas tree, was chosen for the Special Olympics Thank You cards sent to donors across the nation. Throughout his years with Aspire, Mike also held jobs at several Aberdeen businesses. He was proud of his work, and he was surrounded by Aspire staff who he loved and who cared for him with compassion and dignity.
Mike was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mansfield. His confirmation verse was Ephesians 2:8-10. He was also a member of a faith group known as the Holy Brothers, where, under the guidance of Pastor Bret Bierman and David Peterson, he faithfully participated in communion and Bible Study.
Mike is survived by his father, Larry (Letitia) Krause; sister Lori (Tom) Garrison; stepsisters Kimberly (Kent) Fraser and Kirsten Ackmann; stepbrother Brian (Erin) Ellison; three nephews; one great-nephew; ten step nieces and nephews; and his best friend of 15 years, Betsy Harry.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Gwen Krause (neé Palmer), and his grandparents: Otto and Lena Krause (neé Bierman) and Glen and Darline Palmer (neé Kight).
The family requests that any memorials be sent to Aspire in Aberdeen, SD, in honor of the care, opportunities, and love they provided Mike over the years.
