With heavy hearts and deep love, we remember Michael Joel Hluchy, who passed away on September 21, 2026, after a brief battle with cancer. Schriver’s Memorial Mortuary and Crematory, 414 5th Avenue NW, Aberdeen, is honored to serve the Hluchy family. Friends and family may sign the online guestbook at www.schriversmemorial.com.

Michael was born on November 8, 1944, in Chicago, Illinois, to Michael and Ethel (Kulsky) Hluchy. He grew up on Chicago’s South Side, a place that helped shape his spirit, his love of sports, and the pride he carried throughout his life. He never lost that connection to where he came from, and the stories and lessons of those early years became part of the man his family and friends came to cherish.

After high school, Michael moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where he attended Sioux Falls College and earned a degree in business administration. More importantly, it was there that he met Cheryl (Polly), the love of his life. Their marriage on August 4, 1967, began a partnership marked by devotion, commitment, and love. Together, Michael and Cheryl raised their two sons, Michael Aaron and Nicholas Joel, and built a home filled with laughter, warmth, encouragement, and the kind of everyday moments that become treasured memories.

To his family, Michael was more than the details of a life well lived. He was a steady presence, a storyteller, a sports fan, an outdoorsman, and someone who enjoyed being surrounded by the people he loved. He had an easy way with others and a welcoming nature. Whether sharing conversation, watching a game, spending time outside, or making his much-loved soft caramels, Michael found joy in being with those he loved.

He will be lovingly remembered by his sons, Michael (Claudean) Hluchy of Aberdeen, South Dakota, and Nicholas (Jennifer) Hluchy of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; his grandchildren, Morgan (Thaddius) Hluchy of Bellevue, Nebraska, Marcus (TyAnn) Hluchy of Pierre, South Dakota, Michael Andrew Hluchy of Aberdeen, South Dakota, and Benjamin Hluchy and Christopher Hluchy of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; his sister, Ethelann (Jack) Knight of Georgetown, Texas; his brother-in-law, David (Maria) Polly of North Pole, Alaska; and his sisters-in-law, Beth (Joe) Bott of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Bonnie Polly of Omaha, Nebraska.

Michael was preceded in death by his parents, Michael and Ethel Hluchy; his in-laws, Gerald and Martha Polly; brother-in-law Gary Polly; and his beloved wife, Cheryl.

Though he will be deeply missed, his family takes comfort in knowing that his love, humor, stories, and traditions will continue to live on in all who were blessed to share in his life.
