Michael James Costello

Michael James Costello, 73, of Aberdeen, SD, passed away Thursday, June 18, 2020, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital, Aberdeen.

A Celebration of Life is 2:00 pm, Wednesday, June 24, 2020, at Schriver’s Memorial Fellowship Center, Aberdeen.

Visitation and refreshments will start at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, at the Fellowship Center.

Michael James Costello was born May 8, 1947 to Stanley and Kathleen (Casey) Costello in Rapid City, SD. Michael grew up in Aberdeen and went to Sacred Heart Catholic School.  He graduated from Aberdeen Central High School with the Class of 1965.  Michael attended Northern State College for two years before joining the Navy in 1967.  He was trained as a dental technician in San Diego.  Michael was transferred to Hawaii and then stationed in Okinawa, Japan.  This is where Michael met his future wife, Mariko Kuniyoshi.  They welcomed a baby boy, Mark, while they were in Japan.  Michael and his family moved back to Aberdeen for a short time before finishing out his enlistment in Chicago for six months.  A baby girl, Michelle Marie (Miki), was born to complete Michael’s family.

Michael continued his education at Presentation College earning two degrees in four years.  He then started working for South Dakota Public Safety Department issuing Driver’s Licenses.  He also worked for KKAA radio station as a sales representative.  Michael finished out his career running his own Advertising Agency as a Media Specialist.

Michael had great affection for his friends and family, especially his four grandchildren.  He was a great fan of the Chicago Bears and always enjoyed listening to The Beatles.  At home, you could always find Michael in his gazebo relaxing, napping, sipping on a cocktail or conversing with neighbors and friends.

Grateful for having shared Michaels life are his wife, Mariko; children, Mark Costello and Michelle (Josh) Raw; Grandchildren: Zander, Zavier, Skylar, and Chloe; and seven sisters: Laurel (Al) Johnson, Paula Braun, Clalien (Tom) Dahl, Peggy (Randy) Gable, Jaci Costello, Pam Costello, and Carol (Ron) Cameron.

Michael was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Gerald Braun.
