Mass of Christian Burial for Mavis Elgene Nikolas, 85, of Aberdeen, will be 10:00 a.m., Thursday, April 24, 2014 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 409 2nd Ave NE, Aberdeen with Fr. J. Joseph Holzhauser, Celebrant. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.

A Liturgical Wake, followed by a Catholic Daughter’s Rosary, will be at 7:00 pm., Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at Schriver’s Memorial Mortuary & Crematory, 414 5th Avenue NW, Aberdeen. Visitation will be 5-7 pm., Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at the mortuary and also for one hour before Mass on Thursday at the church. Mavis’s online guestbook is available at schriversmemorial.com.

Mavis passed away on Friday, April 18, 2014 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen. Blessed be her memory.

Mavis Elgene Anderson was born on a farm in rural Claremont, SD to Lester and Emma (Johnson) Anderson on December 11, 1928. She graduated from Claremont High School, Claremont, SD. She attended Northern State University, graduating with a Medical Technology Certificate plus one year of training at St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen, SD. Mavis was a student in the first Medical Technology graduating class at St. Luke’s Hospital. Mavis was employed at St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen and Memorial Hospital in Watertown, SD. She completed her employment at St. Luke’s in Aberdeen.

Mavis was united in marriage to George Casper Nikolas on August 30, 1958, at St. Mary’s Church in Aberdeen. This union was blessed with seven children.

Mavis loved spending time with her family and friends. She was a caring, devoted, wife and mother. Her husband and family are grateful to God to have received this blessing. Her passion for farm life never left her heart. She enjoyed the rejuvenating life of spring, which was evident in her hobbies of gardening, growing flowers, fall canning, love of animals and bird watching. Mavis was a lifetime member of Catholic Daughters of the Americas, and member of Women of the Moose in Aberdeen.

Blessed to have shared her life is her husband, George Nikolas of Aberdeen; children: Connie Nikolas and Maureen Nikolas, both of Aberdeen, Mark (JoAnn) Nikolas of Glenwood, MN, Priscilla (Greg) Thornton, Roger (Jill) Nikolas and Paul (Michelle) Nikolas, all of Sioux Falls, SD and Nancy (Glenn) Maier of Bismarck, ND; grandchildren: Mercedes, Christopher, and Michael Leon, Allie, Joseph, and Micah Nikolas, Lucas, and Andrew Nikolas, and Logan Maier; step-grandchildren: Jordon and Kelsey Thornton, and Jeremiah Maier; sisters: Virginia Spencer of Minnetonka, MN and Janet (Kenneth) Frey of Claremont, SD; sisters-in-law: Connie Anderson and Fran (Gene) Lux, both of Aberdeen; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding Mavis in death are her parents, Lester and Emma Anderson; her brother, Charles Anderson; and her maternal and paternal grandparents.
