Marvin Dean Lorenzen was born on November 6, 1923, to Barney and Grace (Schultz) Lorenzen in Barnard, SD. This is the area where he was raised and attended school, graduating from Barnard High School with the Class of 1941. Following his father's death, Marvin's mother, Grace, married William Des Camps, who became an important person in Marvin's life.
Marvin was united in marriage to Viola Weber at Aberdeen, SD, on May 29, 1943. Marvin worked at K.O. Lee Company for a short time before entering the United States Air Force in 1943. He served his country until 1946, when he received his Honorable Discharge. Marvin then returned to Aberdeen and began employment at the Johnston Culvert Company as Assistant Manager before becoming an insurance agent with Prudential Life Insurance Company. He later was a district manager for Farmers Union Company, where he remained until the time of his retirement in 1985.
Marvin loved spending time outdoors, especially gardening. He also enjoyed woodworking projects and traveling, especially to Texas where he spent the winter months. Above all, Marvin loved spending time with his grandchildren, to whom he was known as "Grandpa Marvelous". He will always be remembered for his way with words, which he shared in all his poems, stories, and jingles.
Blessed to have shared in Marvin's life is his wife of 72 years, Viola Lorenzen of Aberdeen; one son, Larry (Joan) Lorenzen of Aberdeen; two grandchildren: LeAnn (Gene) Fredrickson and Lori (Casey) Moelter; and three great-granddaughters: Morgan Moelter, Madison Moelter and Falynn Fredrickson.
Marvin was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Linda, in 1954; his parents, Barney and Grace; his stepfather, William; two brothers; two sisters; two stepbrothers; and two stepsisters.
