The family made their home in Leola, SD, where Marlys worked as the Head Librarian at the Leola Public Library from June of 2008 until the time of her death. In her spare time, she was also an Alison's Pantry Representative.

Marlys was a very active member of St. James Lutheran Church, serving as a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher and also as the advisor for the Lutheran Youth Organization. She was very involved in the community as well, serving as a member of the Leola Development Corporation and as the Treasurer for Rhubarb Days.

Marlys loved spending time with family and friends. She also was an avid collector of Coke memorabilia.

Grateful to have shared in her life are her husband, Brian Walz and her son, Zackary Walz, both of Leola, SD; and her sisters, Michele Weyh and Melissa Weyh, both of Sioux Falls, SD.
