Marion Martha Schoch was born on May 14, 1923, to John and Katherine (Kreitel) Schoch in the Frank Gisi house in Hosmer, SD, on her mother’s birthday. Marion’s early years were spent on the family farm, initially just a half-mile west of Hosmer, SD, before the family relocated to a farm three miles west of town. In 1945, after the passing of her mother in 1943 and her father in 1950, Marion moved back to the family farm near Hosmer. She worked at Tiffany Laundry in Aberdeen for some time.
Marion met Matt Malsom at a dance in Roscoe, and the two were married on October 27, 1947. Together, they moved to a farm where they worked side by side— outside together in the summer and inside together during the winter. Their union was blessed with nine children, and the family shared many years of hard work and love on the farm.
In 1977, Marion and Matt sold the farm to their sons, Mathew and Pius, and moved to Aberdeen to enjoy a new chapter of their lives. After retirement, Marion and Matt enjoyed traveling extensively. They visited Germany, Hawaii, Canada, and nearly every state in the U.S., creating cherished memories along the way.
Marion was also known for her love of baking, particularly her bread, and she always had a large vegetable garden. She took pride in canning and freezing much of the produce, ensuring her family had homegrown goodness year-round.
Marion is survived by her children: Diane (Bob) Allbee of Roscoe, SD, Angeline (Randy) Crawford and Marilyn (Ray) Wik both of Aberdeen, SD, Frances (Phil) Monks of Louisville, KY, Mathew (Londa) Malsom and Pius (Sue) Malsom both of Roscoe, SD, Harlan (Ramona) Malsom of Pella, IA, and Mariann (Billy Pahl) Malsom of Aberdeen, SD; sister, Gladys Streifel; sister-in-law, Anna Schoch; 25 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren and two on the way; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 61 years, Matt, who passed away July 17, 2008; one infant son, John; brothers, John, Ed, George, and Harvey; and sisters, Eva Roesler, Frances Guthmiller, Helen Schwan.
