Marigene Atkins

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Marigene “Margie” Lea Atkins (Baumann), a beloved mother, nana, sister, and friend. Margie, age 66, departed this world on August 29, 2026, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen, SD.

A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 10, 2026, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, with Pastor Jeff Whillock officiating.

A time for fellowship and luncheon will follow the service at the church hall.

Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 9, at Schriver's Memorial Chapel, with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 p.m. Visitation continues one hour before the service at the church.

Interment will take place at the South Dakota State Veterans Cemetery in Sioux Falls, SD, at a later date.

Margie Lea Baumann was born on November 18, 1959, in Huron, SD, the cherished daughter of Donald Eugene and Shirley Jean (Ratliff) Baumann.

Margie's academic journey began at Worthington High School and led her to a diploma from Nettleton College as a Medical Assistant.

Margie married her soulmate Dennis Eugene Atkins on March 25, 1984, in Lemmon, SD. Their marriage was a testament to love and partnership, lasting until Dennis' passing in 2021. Together, they raised a family that became the cornerstone of Margie's life.

She dedicated her life to her family and close friends, including becoming her husband's caretaker after his traumatic brain injury. One of Margie’s greatest joys was attending her grandchildren's sporting events and performances, and it was in these moments that her face would light up with pride, celebrating their achievements and supporting them wholeheartedly. She also volunteered at her church kitchen and was an avid poker player.

She is survived by her three children: Heather Atkins, Jeremy (Lesley) Atkins, and Zachary (Samantha) Atkins; and three brothers: Donald (Elizabeth) Baumann Jr., James (Mary) Baumann, and Mark (Joy) Baumann. She was a devoted mother to her children and a proud nana to her ten grandchildren, whose lives she enriched with her love and wisdom.

She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, husband, and many aunts and uncles, cousins, and nephews.

Margie leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and resilience. Her nurturing spirit and unwavering support will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She will forever be remembered for the warmth she brought into the lives of those around her.
