Magdalena “Lena” M. Schwan Vogel, 93, of Aberdeen, passed away Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at Aberdeen Health and Rehab.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 15, 2014, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 409 2nd Avenue NE, Aberdeen, with Father J. Joseph Holzhauser, Celebrant. Burial will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Schriver’s Memorial Mortuary and Crematory, 414 5th Avenue NW, Aberdeen, is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be 5-7:15 p.m., Friday, at the mortuary with a Liturgical Wake Service beginning at 7:15 p.m. Visitation continues for one hour prior to Mass at the church on Saturday.
Magdalena M. Fuhrmann was born on October 20, 1920, in Roscoe, SD, to Pius and Theresa (Roth) Fuhrmann. She was raised in the Roscoe area and attended rural country schools until the 8th grade.
Magdalena married Tom Schwan in Roscoe, SD, on September 23, 1946. The couple made their home in Aberdeen, where Lena was employed at Northern State University and later at RESPIT Home Healthcare for the elderly. She and Tom raised two sons and shared 23 years of marriage before he passed away in 1969.
Lena and Fred Vogel were united in marriage in 1982. They resided in Aberdeen and enjoyed traveling and spending a few winters in Arizona. Fred passed away in 2009, and Lena continued to make Aberdeen her home until the time of her death.
In addition to travelling, Lena also enjoyed playing cards and dancing.
Blessed to have shared in Lena’s life are her sons: Tom (Connie) Schwan of Port Isabel, TX and Ron (Eleanor) Schwan of Burnsville, MN; five grandchildren: Kim Schwan, Kyle Schwan, James Benz, Nicole Schwan and Heidi Schwan; nine great-grandchildren; one great great-grandson; one brother, Mathew (Lavern) Fuhrmann of Aberdeen; and eight half-siblings: Madonna (Frank) Bosch of Strasburg, ND, Luella (Albert) Hopfinger of Aberdeen, Raymond (Angie) Fuhrmann of Arroyo Grande, CA, James Fuhrmann of Colorado, Kenneth (Wanda) Fuhrmann of Aberdeen, Ronald (Ruby) Fuhrmann of Oro Valley, AZ, Virginia (Don) Williams of Grand View, WA and Marcella Fuhrmann of Aberdeen.
Magdalena was preceded in death by both husbands; her parents; her stepmother, Caroline Fuhrmann; and three sisters, Anna Banik, Helen Salwei and Ramona Weron.
