She was raised on a farm near Mellette, SD, and graduated from Northwestern High School with the Class of 1977. Kay furthered her education at Northern State University in Aberdeen and received a Bachelors Degree in Sociology and Gerontology. She worked at Avera Mother Joseph Manor and Aberdeen Health & Rehab before returning to school and receiving an additional degree in Speech Pathology.
Kay was united in marriage to David L. Nikolas on June 2, 1984, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Aberdeen. Their union was blessed with two sons, Joshua and Adam. The family made their home in Aberdeen, where Kay worked for North Central Special Education Cooperative in Groton, Columbia and Bristol, SD and then for the Aberdeen School System. For the last eleven and one half years she resided at Avera Mother Joseph Manor.
Kay enjoyed reading, decorating, attending plays and singing. She was also considered to be a "master shopper". Above all, Kay treasured the time spent with both her and David's family, and they felt the same in return.
