Kathy Ann Frey was born on January 11, 1961, to Dennis and Edna (Riel) Frey in Aberdeen, SD. She was the oldest sibling, big sister to Bonnie Jean and Dennis “DJ.” Kathy graduated from Central High School in 1979, where she met her future husband, Mark Wendt, her high school sweetheart.

Mark and Kathy were united in marriage on May 16, 1981, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Aberdeen. Together, they raised three children: Nathanial, Matthew, and Kristina. They moved frequently because of Mark's military service, finally settling on a small acreage in Warner, SD, in 2000, where they made their lifelong home.

Kathy attended Northern State Teachers’ College, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. She devoted many years to teaching in and around Aberdeen, with a significant focus on Hutterite Colony schools. Even after retiring in 2023, Kathy's love for teaching continued, as she worked part-time as a substitute teacher in the Aberdeen public schools.

Kathy's compassionate nature and artistic skills were evident in her favorite hobbies. She was known for her crafting and DIY projects, often surprising loved ones with her handmade gifts. A true animal lover at heart, she especially loved horses and enjoyed being around all creatures. An avid reader, Kathy rarely went without a book, whether at home, traveling, or camping. She and Mark went on many adventures together. They often camped throughout the Aberdeen area, occasionally planned trips to the Black Hills and Montana, and even enjoyed a recent visit to Hawaii.

Kathy is survived by her loving husband of 44 years, Mark Wendt; her children, Nathanial Wendt, Matthew (Suelen) Wendt, and Kristina Gienger; her cherished grandchildren, Makayla, Michael, Michelle, Cheveyo, Rosalie, Marielle, and Joshua; her sister, Bonnie Jean (Paul) Bertelsen; her brother, Dennis “DJ” (Sandy) Frey; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Kathy was preceded in death by her parents, Dennis and Edna Frey, as well as many extended family members.

Kathy will be deeply missed by everyone who had the privilege to know her, and her memory will continue inspiring those whose lives she touched.
