Kathryn "Kay" (Doxon) McFarland passed away on November 6, 2015, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls at the age of 97.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, November 13, 2015, at Schriver's Memorial Mortuary, 414 5th Avenue NW, Aberdeen.
Visitation will be prior to the service beginning at 10:00 a.m., with the family present.
A luncheon and time of fellowship immediately follows the service at Schriver's Memorial Fellowship Center with burial taking place at Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery.
Kay was born on July 21, 1918, in Quinter, Kansas, to John E. and Anna (Jarboe) Doxon, the eighth of fourteen children. She graduated from Quinter High School in 1936, shortly afterward moving to Kansas City, Missouri, where she worked as a nanny and modeled for local department stores.
She was united in marriage to John (Mac) Maurice McFarland in Pittsburgh, KS, on January 18, 1941, making their home in Kansas City until Mac entered the US Army in 1943. While Mac was stationed overseas, Kay moved to Washington, DC, and worked for the US Department of Agriculture's Office of Information. Following Mac's discharge, they returned to Kansas City and started a family. Mac's career in the wholesale plumbing industry took the family to Fargo, ND, and, in 1955, to Aberdeen. Mac continued his career and he and Kay eventually purchased the business that became McFarland Supply Company.
As they raised their family in Aberdeen, Kay was active in several community organizations and at the First Presbyterian Church. She was an active Scout den mother, loved reading, was an ardent bridge player, and followed her passion of restoring antique furniture. These led to her involvement in book clubs, Bible studies, and the Land of Oz Questers.
Kay and Mac enjoyed traveling, which Kay continued after Mac's death in 1979. She loved the desert and enjoyed watching the Catalina Foothills turn colors at sunset. After spending twenty years in Arizona, Kay returned to Sioux Falls in 2011, and spent her remaining years at the Touchmark retirement community.
Kay is survived by sons: Craig (Audrey) McFarland, Aberdeen, and John (Gail) McFarland, Sioux Falls; grandchildren: Chris (Jami) McFarland, Minneapolis, Megan (Seth) Oeltjenbruns, Marshall, MN, John "Jack" McFarland III, Minneapolis, and Michael McFarland, Bethesda, MD; step-grandchildren: Kim Moser, Fargo, and Deon Moser, Aberdeen; and great-grandchildren: Layla Oeltjenbruns, Lincoln McFarland, Elle McFarland, Anna Moser, and Jacob Moser.
Kay was preceded in death by her son, Kent; her husband, Mac; as well as her parents and all of her siblings.
In keeping with Kay's love of preservation and restoration projects, the family requests memorials are directed to the Land of Oz Questers, % Barb Frank, 417 18th Avenue NE, Aberdeen, SD, 57401.
